50, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at her home. She was the beloved daughter of Joan B. (Toomey) Azar and the late Louis R. Azar. Besides her mother, she is survived by her loving sister, Joanne Diggle, her beloved niece, Ashley Diggle who she adored, and her partner John Plaskon of New York. She was a loving, caring, and generous person to her family and friends and in return was loved by all. She was a world traveler who loved to document her travels through photography.

Maureen enjoyed sharing her experiences with her friends and family. She was an avid animal rights supporter and was a fitness enthusiast. She worked as the assistant recreation director in Central Falls for many years. In addition, she was a long time employee of Macy's Department Store.

Maureen began her teaching career in 1985 as an elementary physical education teacher in her hometown of Central Falls. With a passion for her community and the children, she earned her administration degree and became a successful principal at Feinstein Elementary School in 2001. Shortly thereafter, she was appointed principal at Ella Risk Elementary School in 2008. It is there she dedicated her life to the community, families, students, and staff of the Central Falls School District.

Calling hours will be held Friday, January 24, 2014 at the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln, RI from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Her funeral will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 8:45 a.m. from the Keefe Funeral Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Basil the Great Melkite Catholic Church, 15 Skyview Drive, Lincoln, RI. Burial will be in St. Basil the Great Cemetery, Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Maureen's memory may be made to the Gerald R. Lemay Scholarship Fund, c/o Central Falls Teachers' Union, P.O. Box 182, Central Falls, RI 02863.
